Behind the Scenes at The British Spinal Intervention Course

The British Spinal Intervention Course (BSIC) is more than just a two-day educational event - it is a highly coordinated operation that brings together leading faculty, sponsors, and delegates from across the globe where delegates receive hands-on training in spinal injections (nerve root, facet joint, sacroiliac, pars interarticularis), spinal biopsy (intervertebral disc and transpedicular), vertebroplasty and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as well as an introduction to advanced techniques including cryotherapy and electrochemotherapy (ECT).

Designed as a hands-on course for clinicians in radiology, surgery, and pain management, BSIC combines expert-led teaching with practical cadaveric training and advanced simulation techniques. Working along side the outstanding course organisers and faculty, I assist in most aspects of this interesting educational event.

While delegates experience a seamless and engaging programme, a significant amount of work happens behind the scenes to make this possible.

Secretariat & Year-Round Management

The role extends far beyond the event dates. BSIC requires continuous support throughout the year to maintain its reputation for excellence.

Core secretariat duties include:

  • Managing the central mailbox and responding to enquiries,

  • Designing branded stationery and maintaining consistent visual identity,

  • Ensuring payments are received and have been made,

  • Handling general email queries from faculty, delegates, and stakeholders.

This ongoing administrative backbone ensures the course remains professional, responsive, and well-organised at every stage.

Sponsor Management

Sponsors play an vital role in supporting the delivery and growth of the course. Managing these relationships requires both organisation and attention to detail.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing sponsorship packages,

  • Associated paperwork - Invoicing and Terms & Conditions,

  • Compiling and distributing invitation letters,

  • Monitoring payments and financial tracking,

  • Sending tailored joining and logistics instructions.

Ensuring sponsors are well-informed and supported contributes to a successful exhibition and overall event experience.

Delegate Experience

A smooth and professional delegate journey is central to BSIC’s success. From registration through to certification, every touchpoint is carefully managed.

Key tasks include:

  • Building and maintaining the registration website via EventCreate,

  • Responding promptly to delegate queries and issues,

  • Drafting Terms & Conditions,

  • Creating feedback forms to support continuous improvement,

  • Producing delegate badges and sign-in sheets,

  • Feedback surveys - compile and share with course organisers,

  • Issuing CPD certificates post-event.

Given the course’s hands-on nature and limited capacity, ensuring clear communication and efficient processes is essential.

Venue & Logistics Coordination

BSIC typically takes place across multiple venues in Bristol, combining lecture-based learning with practical lab experience.

Close liaison with venues is required to ensure:

  • Exhibition spaces are set up correctly,

  • Dietary requirements are accommodated,

  • Accessibility needs are met,

  • Timelines for both days run smoothly.

In addition, coordination with course organisers ensures that all requests—whether educational, technical, or logistical—are actioned effectively.

Faculty Coordination

Working closely with an international faculty is a key part of delivering BSIC. From the outset, responsibilities include assisting with transport and accommodation to ensure each speaker’s journey is smooth and stress-free.

Faculty engagement also involves:

  • Gathering expense documents,

  • Sending detailed joining instructions,

  • Acting as a central point of contact for queries.

With all faculty members actively involved in clinical practice and teaching worldwide, clear communication and organisation are essential to maintaining the high standard of the course.

Bringing It All Together

From managing faculty and sponsors to supporting delegates and coordinating logistics, the delivery of the British Spinal Intervention Course is a truly collaborative effort.

The result is a highly regarded training course praised for its organisation, expert teaching, and hands-on learning experience—something reflected in consistently excellent feedback from both delegates and faculty.

Behind every successful conference is a dedicated operational team ensuring that every detail—no matter how small—is handled with precision.
